COMPANY DESCRIPTION

The Foundry’s sailing center is located in the Historic Coast Guard Station on Whiskey Island (“The Station”), only a few minutes from our headquarters and 1.5 miles downriver! The facility was designed by architect J. Milton Dyer (who also designed City Hall) in the Art Moderne style and constructed in 1940 by the U.S. Coast Guard. It was operated until 1976, when it was abandoned after the utility lines in the causeway failed. It has remained empty since then, with the exception of a brief period in the 1990s when it was a nightclub accessible by water only. Sitting empty for so long, the facility deteriorated greatly before being added to the National Register of Historic Places. The City of Cleveland replaced the roof in 2009, preventing any major additional degradation. The Foundry was granted access to the facility through an affiliate agreement with Cleveland Metroparks, and began underwater demolition in the existing basin. A state-of-the-art floating dock system has been installed by the Foundry, with capacity for 18 dinghies, several J/22s, several 33’+ keelboats, and our fleet of safety boats.
